Vibrant congregation seeks a Minister of Music to lead its music ministry program.  FBCLA is an American Baptist Congregation serving Los Angeles since 1874, committed to being International, Intercultural and Ecumenical, finding unity in the diversity of the Christian faith.  The church serves a multi-cultural, urban community, occupying an architecturally historic edifice built in 1927 with an ornate 1,950-seat sanctuary and 90-rank 5,000-pipe organ.  

POSITION PROFILE:  The Minister of Music is a part-time position, reporting to and working with the Senior Minister to provide leadership in executing the Church’s overall music program
 
SALARY:  Negotiable depending on qualifications, education and/or experience. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Oversee entire music program of the Church.
• In consultation with the Senior Minister and Worship Ministry Coordinator, plan all regular Sunday morning worship services, including:  selecting choral and special music; appropriate hymns and litanies; order of worship.
• Direct Cathedral Choir, including:  leading weekly rehearsals; selecting music and soloists; and other major services throughout the year.
• In consultation with the Senior Minister and Worship Ministry Coordinator, develop new and creative music programs and activities using FBCLA’s diverse constituencies, such as ethnic, youth or other special interest groups.
• Supervise music staff, including soloists, choir section leaders, organist and guest musicians.
• Recruit, audition and select soloists (temporary or permanent), guest artists (vocal or instrumental), substitute organists or instrumentalists.
• Recruit and motivate laypersons and volunteers to actively participate as singers or instrumentalists and/or technical support.
• Assist in preparing annual budget for the music department.
• Maintain and develop Church Music Library.
• Oversee maintenance of Church organs and pianos.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Ability to execute and adapt to a range of liturgical styles.
• Gifts of leadership, organization and administration.
• Musically gifted and trained.

Education and Experience:   

• Bachelor’s or higher degree and/or conservatory training in music and diverse musical training strongly preferred. 
• Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in music, church ministries, music education, the arts or related field desirable.
• Experience in choral conducting required.
• Experience in stage productions desirable.
